Weekend

Humour aside, my deep condolences for the departed soul of the great Shehnai maestro, Ustad Bismillah Khan who passed away on Monday morning in Varanasi after a cardiac arrest. He was 91 and is the third classical musician after Pt Ravi Shankar and M S Subbalakshmi to be awarded the Bharath Ratna, the highest civilian honour in India. During his long and fruitful career as an artiste, Khan enthralled audiences at performances across the globe. He was honoured with the Sangeet Natak Akademi award, the Tansen award as well as the Padma Vibhushan.

The shehnai is one of the most popular musical instruments in Indian music and the gentle genius of Bismillah Khan is perhaps single handedly responsible for making Shehnai a famous classical instrument. It is played morning and evening at the time of prayer in most big temples, during holy festivals, and on all auspicious occasions. The sound of a shehnai fills the atmosphere with a soothing sweetness and sublime peace and hypnotizes the listeners. Traditionally used to play music during marriages, Shehnai is the counterpart of south indian nadaswaram.

May his soul rest in peace..
