Happy Rakhi to all you brothers and sisters!!!
Tuesday, August 28, 2007
Rakhi, the bond of togetherness… A small thread, which alone is of no value but the moment it is tied on the hand of Brother, it becomes invaluable...
Rakhi

Raksha Bandhan is a festival celebrating the bond of affection between brothers and sisters. The day when the siblings pray for each others' well being and wish for each others' happiness and goodwill. As the name 'Raksha Bandhan' suggests, 'a bond of protection', Raksha Bandhan is a pledge from brothers to protect the sister from all harms and troubles and a prayer from the sister to protect the brother from all evil. Though brothers and sisters share and enjoy the bond of love between them throughout the year, Rakhi is the day when they get an opportunity to express their love and affection towards each other. It is an opportunity for them to commemorate their loving memories, loyalty, closeness, trust and friendship that is lasting and true.

Raksha Bandhan is celebrated every year on 'Shravan Purnima' (Full Moon Day of the Hindu month of Shravan), which generally falls in the month of August. Rakhi for many centuries encompassed the warmth shared between the siblings but now it goes way beyond it. Some tie rakhi to neighbors and close friends signifying a peaceful co-existence of every individual. Celebrations like this promote the feeling of unity and a commitment to all members of society to protect each other and encourage a harmonious Social life. The day certainly has a deeper perspective in today's scenario. The occasion holds for a life long pledge to practice moral, spiritual and cultural values. The values and the sentiments attached to the rituals of this festival are worth inculcating by the whole human race, the sentiments of harmony and peaceful coexistence.

Happy Raksha Bandhan!!

"If there is one place on the face of earth where all the dreams of living men have found a home from the very earliest days when man began the dream of existence, it is India!" - French scholar Romaine Rolland

independence

We celebrate our 60th Independence Day today... August 15th, the day when India woke up to freedom back in 1947, a day that marked new beginnings with the triumph of numerous martyred souls. On the stroke of midnight, a country came into life again as the British handed over the governance of India to the Indian leaders. It was on this historic date that Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime Minister of India, unfurled the Indian tricolour on the magnificent Red Fort, symbolically marking the end of the British colonial rule…

Now at the age of 60, India’s image is that of a resurgent, confident regional power racing to compete with China and the West. India’s economy is now 10th biggest in the world and a new middle class of up to 200 million has been created. The economy is currently growing about 9 percent a year. Though the country still faces huge problems like poverty, infrastructure, etc.. for today, let us bask in the glory of the nation that we love dearly, India - the cradle of civilization and culture.

Today is an occasion to celebrate the freedom of our great democracy while we remember with great reverence the sacrifice that thousands of our brave countrymen gave for this cause. …Here's Wishing everyone a very Happy Indian Independence Day .… Jai Hind!!

Simpsons

Finally, they’ve made a movie out of television’s greatest animated series. In its 18 years, the show has won 23 Emmys, featured more than 300 characters across 400 episodes, which have been broadcast in more than 90 countries, and has been translated into more than 45 languages, generating business worth US$5 billion. After nearly 150 hours of television, you might think they had run out of ideas, but guess not...

Anu is an ardent fan of “Simpsons” and hardly ever gives it a miss. He loves Bart and Homer. What I find quite amusing when Anu watches the show is the fact that he just bursts out laughing any time a character falls down, gets kicked in the face, hit in the head or when Homer belches after drinking beer, when the poor guys behind the scenes worked soo hard writing the wittiest dialogues. I manage to catch the glimpses of the show now and then and my favourite character is Lisa Simpson simply for her intellect and her remarkable ability to have developed some sort of sanity coming from that crazy family.

Anu wants to see the movie so we might be catching all the action on big screen at some point this weekend… Anyway, I had better be off now, have somethings to wrap up before I say Goodbye to the week. Be safe out there and have a great weekend everyone!!
